A 246 km ultra run from the Acropolis in Athens to the Leonidas statue in Sparta. Follows the route of Pheidippides; total time limit of 36 hours, 75 control points with intermediate time cuts along the course and passage through Mount Parthenio at 1200 meters.
Participation is by qualifying standard and selection, not open registration. Applications are accepted between January 25 – February 25 each year via manager.spartathlon.gr and the qualifying standard must have been run within the last two seasons. Some accepted qualifying standards: 120 km in 12 hours (110 km for women); 180 km in 24 hours (170 km for women); 100 miles in under 21 hours (under 22 hours for women); Badwater in under 39 hours; completion of a previous Spartathlon in under 36 hours.
Quota is 400 athletes with country limits: Greece 50; Japan 40; Germany 30; other countries maximum 25 athletes each. Those exceeding the qualifying standard by 25 percent, ten-time finishers, and sole representatives of their country receive direct acceptance; remaining places are distributed by lottery, with the rest placed on the waiting list. Mandatory package for foreign athletes is 1250 euros; basic fee for those residing in Greece is 450 euros.
