One mile is taken as 1.609344 km and every conversion runs off that constant.

These are general ranges and assume normal conditions. Trail, heat, elevation gain, wind and technical ground all make the real time longer.

Frequently asked questions

(11)
Why do some races use miles?

Races in the US and the UK mark distances and splits in miles. Ten miles is 16.09 km and a half marathon is 13.1 miles.

What does the speed on a treadmill mean?

Treadmills usually show km/h. 12 km/h is 5:00 min/km and 10 km/h is 6:00 min/km.

What is 10 km/h on a treadmill in min/km?

10 km/h is exactly 6:00 min/km. Whole-number belt speeds convert like this: 7 km/h is 8:34, 8 km/h is 7:30, 9 km/h is 6:40, 11 km/h is 5:27, 12 km/h is 5:00, 13 km/h is 4:37, 14 km/h is 4:17, 15 km/h is 4:00 and 16 km/h is 3:45 min/km.

What incline should I set on a treadmill?

A 1% incline compensates for the air resistance you would meet outdoors and makes treadmill running the closest match to road pace. From 2% upwards the effort at the same belt speed rises noticeably, so the displayed pace no longer equals your outdoor pace.

Why does my watch disagree with the treadmill speed?

Indoors there is no GPS, so the watch estimates distance from wrist movement and can easily be 5% out on a treadmill. The belt calibration also drifts over time. Treat the treadmill display as the reference and calibrate your watch against it.

How many kilometres is a mile, and how many miles is a half marathon?

One mile is 1.609344 kilometres. A half marathon is 21.0975 km, or 13.11 miles; a marathon is 42.195 km, or 26.22 miles. Ten miles is 16.09 km.

What does mph mean in running?

Mph is miles per hour, the standard unit on treadmills in the United States. 6 mph is 9.66 km/h or 6:13 min/km, 7 mph is 11.27 km/h or 5:20 min/km, and 8 mph is 12.87 km/h or 4:40 min/km.

How do I convert mile pace to kilometre pace in my head?

Multiply mile pace by 0.62: 8:00 min/mile is about 5:00 min/km and 10:00 min/mile about 6:12 min/km. Going the other way, multiply by 1.61. Use the boxes above for exact numbers; the rule is only for a sanity check.

What if my treadmill shows miles?

US treadmills display mph. 6.0 mph is 9.66 km/h or 6:13 min/km, and 7.5 mph is 12.07 km/h or 4:58 min/km. The speed button usually steps in 0.1 mph, roughly 0.16 km/h, so use the mph box when you are choosing between two settings.

What is half marathon and marathon pace in mph?

A two hour half marathon is 5:41 min/km, which is 10.55 km/h or 6.56 mph. A four hour marathon is the same pace and therefore the same speed. A 3:30 marathon is 4:59 min/km, 12.05 km/h or 7.49 mph.

Is treadmill pace the same as my outdoor pace?

Not quite. There is no air resistance indoors and the belt moves under you, so the same speed is slightly harder outside. A 1% incline closes most of the gap. Belt calibration also drifts, so if you train mostly indoors, check yourself on a measured outdoor course now and then.
